ChatGPT Ads Offline Conversion Tracking

ChatGPT Ads now bids for conversions — and it bids on whatever you send it. LeadTrackr sends the qualified leads and closed deals back through OpenAI’s Conversions API, so the auction learns from your pipeline rather than your form fills.

What it does

What Is ChatGPT Ads Offline Conversion Tracking?

ChatGPT Ads offline conversion tracking is the practice of reporting real business outcomes — a qualified lead, a booked job, a signed contract — back to OpenAI after someone clicks a sponsored placement in ChatGPT and lands on your site. OpenAI gives advertisers two measurement layers: the OAIQ pixel for browser-side events, and the ChatGPT Ads Conversions API for server-side events, which is the layer built for conversions that happen after the visit. Attribution runs on the oppref click identifier, appended to your landing page URL on an ad click and stored in an __oppref cookie for 30 days, with a longer-lived __obref browser identifier alongside it.

Since conversion-optimised bidding (oCPC) rolled out, those events are no longer just reporting — they are the training signal for the auction. Send only form fills and ChatGPT Ads buys form fills. LeadTrackr captures the oppref value on landing, holds it against the lead while your sales process runs, and posts the outcome back through the Conversions API with hashed email and phone for advanced matching — so bidding optimises on the leads that turn into revenue.

How to

How to send offline conversions to ChatGPT Ads

Every route into the ChatGPT Ads Conversions API needs the same four things: an identifier captured at the click, a conversion event defined against your Pixel ID, the outcome and its value, and a server-side delivery path with a shared event ID so the pixel and the API never double-count.

  1. Step 1

Capture oppref on the landing page

Store the oppref parameter from the ad click against the lead — LeadTrackr reads it automatically and keeps it for the full 30-day cookie window. Capture the email and phone as well; they carry the match when the click identifier is missing.

  2. Step 2

Provision your Pixel ID and API token

In the ChatGPT Ads Manager conversions tab, create the conversion event and generate the bearer token for the Conversions API. Both the OAIQ pixel and the server-side events report into the same Pixel ID.

  3. Step 3

Deduplicate on a shared event ID

If you run the OAIQ pixel alongside server-side events, send the same event ID from both. Without it the same conversion is counted twice and bidding trains on inflated volume.

  4. Step 4

Post the outcome, not the form fill

Send the event when the lead is genuinely qualified — not at submission. Include the value so ChatGPT Ads can weigh a €12k contract differently from a €400 job.

  5. Step 5

Switch the campaign to conversion bidding

Once your qualified events flow with consistent volume, move the campaign to the conversion-optimised objective (oCPC). Browser-only signal starves it; server-side outcomes feed it.

How it works

Setup in 4 Steps

01

Connect ChatGPT Ads

Link your ChatGPT Ads account to LeadTrackr with the Pixel ID and Conversions API token from your Ads Manager. LeadTrackr handles the hashing and the server-side delivery.
02

Map Your Conversion Events

Map LeadTrackr’s qualified-lead and closed-deal stages to the conversion events you defined in ChatGPT Ads, each with its own value.
03

Qualify Leads

Leads arrive in your dashboard with the oppref click identifier and full campaign attribution already attached. Mark the real ones — or let your CRM do it.
04

Feed Conversion Bidding

LeadTrackr posts each outcome to the Conversions API. ChatGPT Ads attributes it back to the original click and steers delivery toward the placements that produce customers.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

It is oppref — appended to your landing page URL when someone clicks a sponsored placement in ChatGPT, and stored in an __oppref cookie for 30 days. A second identifier, __obref, persists for 365 days and identifies the browser rather than the click. LeadTrackr reads both on landing and keeps them against the lead, so a conversion that happens weeks later still resolves to the placement that earned it. Our full reference of every advertising click ID covers the parsing rules and cookie names side by side.
The pixel is still worth running for page views and browser-side signals, but it cannot see what happens after the visit — and since conversion-optimised bidding went live, browser-only signal starves the auction. The important rule when you run both: send the same event ID from the pixel and from the Conversions API so OpenAI deduplicates them. LeadTrackr sends a stable event ID per conversion for exactly that reason.
Two ways, and LeadTrackr sends both. The oppref click identifier gives an exact match inside its 30-day window. Alongside it, advanced matching uses the hashed email address and phone number that the lead entered in your form, which keeps the match alive when the click identifier is missing — an ad blocker, a stripped parameter, a visitor who switched devices. Hashing happens before anything leaves LeadTrackr; raw contact details are never sent.
Yes. Conversion events accept a value, so you can report what a lead is actually worth rather than counting them all the same. LeadTrackr lets you assign one value when a lead is qualified and another when it closes, or pull the real deal value from your CRM. That is what lets the auction distinguish a five-figure contract from a small job, instead of optimising toward whichever placement produces the most cheap form fills.
That is precisely when it matters most. A new channel has no historical conversion data, so the auction leans harder on whatever you feed it in the first weeks — and early bad signal is expensive to unlearn. Advertisers who start with qualified-lead events rather than form fills get a bidding model trained on their real economics from day one. The setup cost is the same either way; only the signal quality differs.
Yes. Destinations are independent of how the lead arrived and of each other. The same qualified lead can be pushed to ChatGPT Ads via the Conversions API, to Google Ads via Enhanced Conversions for Leads, and to Meta via the Conversions API — each with its own conversion action and value, from one dashboard and one qualification step.
